Friend,
For
the first time in 233 years, we have Native American, Native Alaskan,
and Native Hawaiian representatives in the United States House of
Representatives :
-
Tom Cole (Chickasaw)
-
Sharice Davids (Ho-Chunk)
-
Yvette Herrell (Cherokee)
-
Kaiali’I Kahele (Native Hawaiian)
-
Markwayne Mullin (Cherokee)
-
Mary Peltola (Native Alaskan)
We
can’t overstate how long overdue this is. After centuries of
disenfranchisement, there are now six Indigenous Americans walking the
halls of power !
When
we know our history, we know our truth. So, as we acknowledge this
accomplishment, we also acknowledge the many historical and contemporary
contributions Indigenous people have made and continue to make in
society. Hip Hop Caucus is proud to join the Indigenous community as we
carry on the legacy of honoring our earth, protecting our children, and
making our voices heard.
The
presence of these Indigenous representatives in the House shines as a
beacon of how far we’ve come and highlights the promise of a brighter
future in which Black, Brown, and Indigenous communities have a seat at
the table and a say in their government.
For future generations,
Rev Yearwood
President & CEO
Hip Hop Caucus.
