U.S (UltraViolet) : Stop AAPI Hate ! Stop MASS SHOOTINGS !

Dear friend,

Once again, we find ourselves mourning a tragic loss. We at UltraViolet struggled to respond--we debated whether or not we even should. How to talk about violence against Asian Americans, a community that never receives the full nuance and complex reporting, data, or support it deserves ?

What unfortunately happened at Monterey Park and Half Moon Bay, along with what’s happening in Cop City, is part of a larger conversation to which we cannot do justice in a single web message.

We are recommitting ourselves to racial justice. We won’t just respond to racial violence; we are actively combating racism by being proactive.

To give in to despair and believe we can’t stop mass shootings is giving in to the NRA, Republicans, and other anti-bodily autonomy extremists. We recognize the intersections of gun violence, gender justice, racial justice, and survivor justice, and we must work together to upend violent white supremacist patriarchy.

We don’t have all of the answers, but we do want to share some resources on grief as well as actions that you can take right now.

Resources and actions :

Practices for Moving through Grief - shared by 18 Million Rising and authored by Adrienne Maree Brown, Naima Penniman, Adaku Utah, Mark-Anthony Johnson, and Autumn Brown.

Community Healing Circles for the APIDA community by the Asian Mental Health Project

Candlelight Vigil for those local to Monterey Park

Donate to support the families of Monterey Park : Nine Asian American Pacific Islander (AAPI) organizations and individuals have set up a fund to aid the families of those impacted by the shootings

Resources for Monterey Park Victims and Families

Media guide from the Asian American Journalists Association on how to cover violence in the AAPI community put out a helpful guide on how to cover violence in the AAPI community

Follow these AAPI thought leaders and organizations on social media. A key way we can help disrupt misogyny and racism in our day-to-day lives is by ensuring that the content of anti-racist feminists regularly appears in our social media feeds and timelines for all to see.

Thank you for being a part of the UltraViolet community, and take great care.

In solidarity,
