Hi friend, Across the nation, we've seen carbon capture proposed as a false solution for addressing the climate crisis. Carbon capture uses enormous energy and water, with studies showing up to 14.6 million gallons of water daily just for capture operations. And when the projects end, the abandoned wells in the area create pathways for carbon dioxide leaks that threaten land and water safety. This is exactly what will happen in Jefferson County, Texas, if the EPA approves three permits from Exxon Mobil. The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) has released draft permits for three massive carbon dioxide injection wells—Rose CCS No. 01, 02, and 03—near Fannett in Jefferson County, Texas. If approved, ExxonMobil will inject up to 5 million metric tons of CO₂ each year into formations 3,400–7,800 feet underground. Jefferson County’s population is ~50% people of color and nearly 1 in 5 residents live below the poverty line. This community faces the biggest risks from this project. History has shown what happens when incidents like the 2017 LaBarge School (WY) evacuation and the 2020 Satartia (MS) pipeline rupture occur without accountability. This is our moment to prevent something like this from happening again. The deadline for comments is TODAY, August 4, 2025, at 11:59 CDT. Don’t let ExxonMobil gamble with Black, Brown, Indigenous, and frontline communities and the environment. We hope you will stand with the people of Jefferson County today. For future generations,
Dr. Alexa White |
