Our recent poll found that nearly half of voters say they or someone in their home has cut back on essentials like food, clothing, or gas because of debt. That’s why we’ll be watching the newly elected Congress to see who lives up to their campaign promises, and who is siding with Big Tech and Wall Street over everyday people. Here’s what we know:
This is what we fight for. At Americans for Financial Reform, we’re doubling down on our commitment to expose the connection between corporate power and the cost of everyday life.
We use findings like these to challenge industry arguments, inform lawmakers and their staff, and organize allies around policies that make a concrete difference in people’s lives. When corporate lobbyists rush in and demand more rollbacks, AFR is ready to bring evidence of the harm their agenda will cause and tell the real story about the kind of change voters want to see. The demand for action is overwhelming. Across party lines, people want protections that leave more money available for their families and stop financial companies from piling on charges. Wall Street, Big Tech, and crypto companies want to shape the rules governing our money, then profit from the special treatment they secure. The polling shows that people recognize that danger: nearly three-quarters of voters say Big Tech has too much influence in Washington. Voters are deeply concerned about crypto’s political spending, too. After hearing about the industry’s contributions to politicians, four in five expressed concern that resulting laws would deliver huge profits for insiders while exposing everyday people and investors to instability, losses, and scams. Corporate influence over financial policy puts people’s financial security on the line. AFR confronts that influence across our work. We fight abusive fees and predatory lending, challenge industry efforts to secure exemptions from consumer protections, and defend the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau. We also fight to keep medical debt from damaging credit and putting the dream of owning a home further out of reach. This election can be a turning point. Can you give $5 or more today to make this work possible? Thank you for your continued support and for all you do to fight for a strong, stable, and ethical financial system. - Tom.
