Act #WithHumanity

Here’s what you can do to help save lives at sea.

ACT NOW

Frontex, the European Border and Coast Guard Agency, should be saving lives.

Frontex has a responsibility under EU and international law to ensure the safety and human rights of people in danger at sea. In June 2023, the agency alerted the Greek authorities of an overcrowded boat, the Adriana, in their search and rescue region. However, Frontex did not issue a mayday alert because, according to them, the incident didn’t represent an “imminent risk to human life.”

15 hours later, the boat capsized and sank, leading to the death of more than 600 women, men and children seeking safety or a better life.

We are calling for Frontex to take immediate steps that can save lives—including issuing more frequent emergency alerts to all vessels in the area when an unseaworthy boat is spotted. As an institution staffed by public agents who “care about people,”1 it’s time for Frontex to demonstrate it will act #WithHumanity.

Urge Frontex Executive Director Hans Leijtens to make changes by signing today.
