Frontex, the European Border and Coast Guard Agency, should be saving lives.
Frontex has a responsibility under EU and international law to ensure the safety and human rights of people in danger at sea. In June 2023, the agency alerted the Greek authorities of an overcrowded boat, the Adriana, in their search and rescue region. However, Frontex did not issue a mayday alert because, according to them, the incident didn’t represent an “imminent risk to human life.”
15 hours later, the boat capsized and sank, leading to the death of more than 600 women, men and children seeking safety or a better life. |
