U.S : INDIGENOUS PEOPLE'S DAY in NEW YORK STATE.

Hi all,

Thank you for supporting our call to recognize Indigenous peoples Day in New York ! The fight has just begun; we need you to take action today in order to make this a reality.

Since signing the petition, a lot has happened. One critical new update is that two indigenous legislators, State Senator Jessica Ramos and Assembly Member Mitanyes, are championing S8553/A1001 - a bill that would recognize Indigenous Peoples' Day as a holiday in New York State.

Unfortunately in response, Governor Hochul, who has the power to sign this bill into law after its passage, announced that she does not support this bill and would be walking in the Columbus Day Parade

This is unacceptable. Tell Governor Hochul that she must recognize the violent history behind Columbus Day and honor our Indigenous community by supporting this legislation.

TAKE ACTION NOW-  Call the Governor to support Legislative Bill S8553/A1001, script below and share this petition https://bit.ly/IPD_Petition with family and friends

Hi my name is XXX and I live XXX, NY.

I am calling to urge Governor Hochul to support Legislative Bill S8553/A1001 that will rename Columbus Day to Indigenous Peoples' Day, and to express my outrage at the Governor’s appearance at the Columbus Day Parade.

The legacy of Columbus Day is one we must denounce in order to truly reckon with our country's history of violence and racism towards Indigienous, Black and brown Americans.

Governor Hochul said in an interview she will continue to support Columbus Day, despite his legacy of violence ! Will Governor Hochul reconsider her support for the existing bill and finally honor our Indigenous community here in New York State ?

Thank you for taking action today !

In solidarity and deep appreciation,

Maria Bautista.
