Dear friend, We cannot have a fair society while we have a tax system that forces teachers and firefighters to pay more in taxes than billionaires do. It’s time to tax the ultra-wealthy and force the rich to pay their fair share. The concentration of wealth in the U.S. is continuing to move into the hands of the top 1% unchecked. A wealth tax would fight this growing inequality by forcing these ultra-rich players to finally pay their fair share of taxes. If billionaires paid their fair share, the revenue raised from taxing the rich could be used to invest in public goods like free college, green jobs, health care, and public transportation that benefit all of us, and help create a more just economy.
While the Trump administration continues to double down on corruption and giveaways to the ultrarich, states are taking up the fight to make our tax system work for the greater good. In California, labor unions, immigrant rights groups, and climate justice organizations are organizing to close loopholes and raise taxes on extreme wealth and high-end investment income to fund public education, Medi-Cal, affordable housing, worker protections, and wildfire and climate resilience. In Connecticut, unions for public employees, nurses, and educators have joined with community groups to press lawmakers to raise taxes on millionaires and reform capital gains taxation. Advocates are calling for new revenues to strengthen public schools, expand health care access, invest in aging infrastructure, and provide real property tax relief for working families. As Trump and congressional Republicans slash federal funding, states are increasingly the last line of defense for working people. The lesson is clear: fair taxes curb concentrations of wealth, fund services we all rely on, and strengthen democracy itself. Thank you for standing up for a fair tax system that works for everyone. -Take On Wall Street.
