HUMANITARIAN WORKERS are NOT TARGETS ! (SAVE THE CHILDREN INTERNATIONAL)

Hi friend,

Today is World Humanitarian Day
- a day to recognise the people who provide vital support to children and families affected by conflict, disaster and displacement.

Humanitarian workers operate in some of the world’s most dangerous places.

Many work within their own communities, responding to crises while facing the same violence and hardship as the people they support.

But their work is becoming increasingly dangerous.

More than 1,000 humanitarian workers have been killed over the past three years, making this the deadliest period on record for the humanitarian community. In 2025, 97% of aid workers who were killed, injured or abducted were local staff.

Behind every statistic is a person: a parent, sibling, friend, neighbour or colleague. Their loss is felt not only by their loved ones, but also by the children and communities who rely on them.

Attacks on humanitarian workers have consequences far beyond their immediate victims. When aid workers cannot safely reach communities, children can lose access to food, clean water, healthcare, education and protection. Even a short interruption to these essential services can have devastating and lasting consequences.

Across conflicts around the world, aid convoys are being struck or blocked, healthcare facilities are being damaged, and humanitarian operations are being obstructed through violence and bureaucracy.

  • In Sudan 🇸🇩, restrictions have prevented vital assistance from reaching children facing severe hunger.
  • In Gaza 🇵🇸, attacks affecting humanitarian operations have disrupted food assistance, healthcare and child protection services.
  • In Haiti 🇭🇹, escalating violence has made it increasingly difficult for children and families to access essential support.

🎥 Watch this short video to learn more about the dangers humanitarian workers face - and what this means for the children and communities they are working to reach.

Humanitarian workers are protected under international humanitarian law. They should never be attacked, detained, obstructed or prevented from carrying out their work.

Protecting humanitarian workers means protecting the children and communities they serve.

This World Humanitarian Day, we remember those who have lost their lives while helping others. We recognise the courage of those who continue this work, often at enormous personal risk. And we reaffirm a fundamental principle:

Humanitarian workers are not targets.

Together, we can stand with children affected by conflict and crisis, and with the courageous humanitarian workers helping to reach them with the care, protection and vital assistance they need.

Thank you for your continued support.

Best,

Michael Parker
