It’s WORLD ELEPHANT DAY! (RAINFOREST ACTION NETWORK)

 

Tiny footsteps, growing bigger and bigger over time, until one day they are heard thundering throughout the forest. That is the potential of your gift today, in honor of World Elephant Day, dear friend. From the towering giant Sumatran elephant to the comparably tiny Bornean elephant, rainforest elephants have lived for generations in the dense, vibrant forests of Indonesia. But there are estimated to be fewer than 1,000 Bornean elephants in the wild.1 And estimates for Sumatran elephants vary wildly because their populations are fragmented, forced to move through smaller, disconnected pockets of forest that stretch in and outside of protected areas.2 In 2007, estimates ranged between 2,400 to 2,800 Sumatran elephants: in almost two decades since that assessment, can you imagine how much their populations have changed?3 Fight for elephants When critical rainforest habitats are destroyed to make way for Conflict Palm Oil, paper, and pulp plantations, elephants lose everything. Their food. Their water. Their freedom to move through their lands. It’s a cycle of destruction that has to stop before it’s too late. Corporate greed is the force behind this destruction. Acres of pristine forests are cleared to make room for cheap ingredients. Those everyday, big name snacks in our grocery aisles and the products that supply our bathroom shelves have a dark and unseen cost. Help us hold corporations accountable, help strengthen our campaigns to keep forests standing. Your gift protects their futures And when forests disappear, it becomes even easier for a different type of predator: poachers. When endangered elephants are still targeted as commodities, and the roads the loggers use are the ones poachers use too, elephants face threats from every side.
