Federal law requires the Bureau to maintain a consumer complaint database, while federal information law requires agencies to provide timely and equitable access to public information, make public data assets available in open formats, and provide adequate notice when terminating significant information products. The Trump administration is planning to ignore all of that and stop publicly posting consumer complaints and requests for help from the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau. It’s not just the wrong thing to do – it’s dangerous. The more corporate wrong doing is hidden from the public, the easier it is for predatory lenders, scammers, and others to get away with ripping consumers off.
