Right now, states across the country are proposing Jim Crow-style voting restrictions, from massive voter roll purges to onerous new ID requirements that are hard for low-income and Black and brown people to meet. It’s a desperately needed response to decades of voter suppression and other assaults on democracy, such as the Jan. 6 Capitol uprising And critically, the #ForThePeopleAct also creates independent redistricting commissions to prevent partisan gerrymandering.
