Hi,
Let’s be clear : we’ve suffered a major setback. The annual meeting of the Convention for the Conservation of Antarctic Marine Living Resources (CCAMLR) just wrapped up in Hobart, Australia, leaving crucial discussions unresolved over the future of the Southern Ocean.
Representing 26 countries and the European Union, CCAMLR has the power to establish new marine protected areas (MPAs) in Antarctica — including four critical sites that, together, would mark the largest act of ocean protection in history and a huge step toward the global goal of protecting at least 30% of the ocean by 2030.
Yet despite a year of hopeful negotiations, CCAMLR members failed to deliver. Key proposals to establish new marine protected areas were blocked by Russia and China. Even worse, regulations for the sustainable management of Antarctica’s booming krill fishing industry were rolled back.
Now more than ever, we need your help to keep fighting for a protected Antarctica.
