U.S : Sending asylum seekers back to Haiti is dangerous.

Friend, the recent assassination of Haitian President Jovenel Moïse climaxed the danger and turmoil that many Haitian citizens fled to America to escape. Yet, under the Biden Administration’s watch, more than 900 Haitian asylum seekers (including children) faced deportation in February alone.

In 2020, the Trump Administration implemented a policy (Title 42) using the COVID pandemic as a pretext to deny asylum seekers at the southern border. Under this policy, hundreds of thousands of asylum seekers have been expelled without due process—including many Haitian children.

Even though the Biden Administration lifted Trump’s racist asylum seeker ban for Haiti in May 2021, the Haitian Temporary Protected Status (TPS) has yet to be formalized. This delay means eligible Haitians already in the U.S. can’t yet apply for work permits and protection from deportation.

The Yemen re-designation took 3 days from announcement to formalization.--but it has been over 50 days and Haiti’s TPS is still not formalized. We must address that the delay is rooted in systematic racism and discrimination against Haitians.

There is no time to delay the removal of Title 42. Haiti is a country in complete chaos and distress after the assassination of their President. Sending asylum seekers back during this time is dangerous and unjust to the fabric of America.
