U.S (UltraViolet) : BLACK LEADER facing DEATH THREATS.

Tami Sawyer, a commissioner from Shelby County, Tenn., led the effort to take down memorials glorifying confederate leaders in her hometown of Memphis.1

Now, she's the target of so many death threats and harassment from white supremacists that she's been forced to hire 24-hour security.

One white supremacist was arrested after threatening Tami at a news conference intended to celebrate the removal of a monument to KKK founder and slave trader Nathan Bedford Forrest.2 Since then, the flood of threats escalated to the point where she must assume that she and her family are in danger.3

As a county commissioner, chair of the Memphis NAACP Legal Defense Fund, and student, Tami is far from wealthy, and the county does not pay for her security. So when we heard that she needed help paying these costs, we knew to ask UltraViolet members, who would step up.

Will you donate to help cover the costs of Tami's security and help her keep fighting for racial justice? Every dollar you donate will go directly to Tami and her team.

As a Black woman and social justice activist, Tami is no stranger to threats of physical violence. But when she took up the campaign to take down statues and monuments to pro-slavery, confederate leaders like Forrest and Jefferson Davis, the threats escalated dramatically.

At a news conference, one man threatened to beat her, while waving a confederate flag and singing Dixie, the racist confederate anthem. She then received a flood of death threats and racist epithets on social media and by email.

We all know why Tami is being targeted by these violent white supremacists--because she is a powerful Black woman and champion for racial justice.

And she is far from the first prominent person of color or progressive leader facing threats of violence. The U.S. has a long, bloody history of violence against Black leaders. Especially after January 6, these threats must be taken seriously.

We're aiming to raise $5,000 to help Tami cover the costs of her security detail. Donate today, and 100% of your donation will go to help Tami stay safe and fighting for justice.

Thank you.
