This year, we’ve lost the population of an entire city to an epidemic. One that has touched nearly every corner of our nation and left millions of Americans asking themselves why. There’s no vaccine that can fight it, no mask we can wear to protect ourselves, and the government seems unable or unwilling to take the steps necessary to bring it to an end.

 

Gun violence has taken more than 21,000 lives this year alone, and the year is only half over. Faced with the sickening recurrence of mass shootings, murder-suicides, and innocent victims. President Biden has said, “enough.” In recent days, Biden has unveiled a list of executive orders to tackle the gun violence epidemic and has urged Congress to pass a national “red flag” law.

When someone is in the midst of a mental crisis, they can pose a danger to themselves and others. And with access to guns, the consequences can be devastating. That’s why red flag laws are so crucial to saving lives. They allow family members or law enforcement to petition for a court order to temporarily prohibit a person from accessing firearms if they present a danger to themself or others.

 

The first of these laws was passed in 1999 in Connecticut after a deadly shooting at a state lottery facility. Indiana followed suit six years later after the death of a police officer at the hands of a man in a mental health crisis. Since then, nearly 20 states have put red flag laws on the book in some form or another. Yet, that still leaves more than half of the country without this common-sense law.

 

In addition to giving family members and authorities the ability to remove firearms from people in crisis, a national red flag law could establish grant programs to help states and Native tribes implement their own legislation. Local governments could also get funds for training and for public awareness campaigns about the new legislation.

 

No one, no matter where they live, should have to live in danger of gun violence. Red flag laws are common sense, lifesaving tools that people in all 50 states should have access to.
