Ghost guns pose one of the most dangerous threats to our public safety.
These untraceable weapons are built from building blocks that can be easily purchased from an unlicensed seller and assembled at home in under an hour. They don’t have serial numbers and don’t require background checks.
But because pro-gun forces are against common-sense laws, ghost gun regulation faces serious roadblocks. Under its current interpretation of federal law, the U.S. Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms, and Explosives (ATF) does not treat ghost guns as traditional firearms, allowing owners to circumvent almost all of our gun laws.
President Biden is taking action against this regulation failure in gun control with proposed new rules including :
- Requiring anyone purchasing a kit to undergo a background check, as is required for other firearms;
- Requiring sellers of ghost gun kits must mark components with a serial number so that the eventual weapon produced can be traced;
- Mandating that firearm dealers add a serial number to already built ghost guns they come across in their businesses.
