U.S (NATIONAL CAMPAIGN FOR JUSTICE) : Our work pushing CONGRESS to halt book bans...

Friend,

The growing wave of censorship from right-wing extremists is staggering. Classics like Fahrenheit 451, The Diary of Anne Frank, and Orwell's 1984, which each serve as enduring reminders of our historical struggles against oppression, are being banned.

Pulitzer Prize winners like To Kill a Mockingbird and The Color Purple, alongside New York Times bestsellers like The Perks of Being a Wallflower and Thirteen Reasons Why, are also under siege. These bans even extend to children's books like Captain Underpants and The Lion Children's Bible : Stories from the Old and New Testaments.

The urgency of the situation cannot be overstated. That’s why we are organizing dozens of groups representing millions of Americans to put pressure on Congress to get into this fight.

The question laid before our elected representatives is clear-cut : Will they stand against book bans and defend the right to read, or will they align with the fanatical extremism of groups like Moms for Liberty and the Proud Boys ? The impact of their decision, or lack thereof, will reverberate through our classrooms, libraries, and communities.

Now is the time to act. We are mobilizing to amplify our demand that Congress fight against book bans and defend the freedom to read. Contribute to the fight to stop book bans now.

The damage from this hate-driven censorship crusade is real. Kids are being denied access to diverse ideas, teachers are struggling with limited resources, libraries are losing valuable books, and schools are turning into scenes of conflict instead of places of learning.

Already, over 6,000 book bans have been documented since July 2021, with a disturbing 33% increase this year alone. The books targeted reflect the lives and experiences of marginalized communities, with 37% of the banned or restricted books discussing race or featuring characters of color, while 36% have LGBTQ+ characters or themes.

This censorship is not an abstract issue -- it's a direct attack on the rich diversity of thought that fosters a robust learning environment and prepares young individuals for a globalized world.

We cannot afford to stand idle while a nationwide network of extremist groups robs our children and communities of the rich, diverse literary heritage that sparks curiosity, empathy, and constructive discourse.

That's why we're building support in Congress and across the country to fight back against book bans. Fund the fight to stop book bans now.
