Donald Trump, Russell Vought, and Congressional Republicans want Congress to believe the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau is an unpopular, wasteful agency that nobody will miss. They need that lie to justify dismantling the watchdog that protects people from Wall Street fraud, junk fees, discrimination, and predatory lending. Our bipartisan poll with the Center for Responsible Lending proves them wrong. Four in five voters support the CFPB after hearing about its mission, including 77% of Republicans, 69% of independents, and 86% of Democrats. An overwhelming 92% say regulating financial services to ensure fairness for consumers is important. Voters also strongly support the protections Trump and Congress have attacked. 82% support capping credit card late fees at $8. 82% support limiting overdraft fees to $5. 90% support preventing financial companies from selling consumers’ private data. These numbers give us an irrefutable case in Washington. AFR is putting this research before national and Beltway reporters, congressional offices, and advocates nationwide so Trump and Wall Street cannot rewrite the public record.
This polling is one part of our three-pronged campaign to turn overwhelming public support into political pressure. First, we generate media coverage that reaches lawmakers and congressional staff. Every story showing bipartisan support for the CFPB makes it harder for politicians to pretend voters want weaker consumer protections. Second, our nationwide network of more than 350,000 people sends letters and makes calls directly to Congress. Lawmakers need to hear that the numbers in the poll represent real constituents who are watching their votes. Third, AFR experts meet directly with members of Congress and their staff, hold briefings, and provide the research they need to fight Wall Street’s agenda. Polling establishes the facts, grassroots action demonstrates the urgency, and direct advocacy forces Congress to respond. Let’s win the public argument and defend people and communities. - Tom.
