Right now, Americans for Financial Reform and Indivisible are bringing the fight against Trump’s crypto corruption directly into the Capitol. This morning, we co-hosted Stop Trump’s Crypto Corruption, a briefing and public event with Senate champions, members of Congress and their staff, Indivisible Co-Executive Director Ezra Levin, author and filmmaker Ben McKenzie, and AFR Co-Executive Director Ericka Taylor. We are making sure lawmakers understand exactly who wrote the so-called CLARITY Act, who stands to profit from it, and who will be left paying for the damage. Outside the Capitol, our nationwide grassroots network has already sent more than 131,000 letters to Congress demanding that Senators go beyond casting a quiet no vote. We’re pressuring Senators to filibuster the CLARITY Act, block every attempt to advance it, and prevent this crypto industry giveaway from ever moving on the Senate floor. That is our inside-out strategy in action. AFR staff and allies bring the research, policy expertise, coalition power, and direct congressional advocacy on Capitol Hill. Grassroots activists deliver undeniable pressure from every corner of the country. Last year, that combination helped stop the first attempts to turn the crypto lobby’s wish list into law.
The so-called CLARITY Act was crafted by and for crypto billionaires. AFR’s Co-Executive Director Ericka Taylor said at Tuesday’s event.
Crypto billionaires want all the privileges of Wall Street with even fewer rules and consequences. Trump is showing exactly how dangerous that arrangement would be. He and his family have used Trump-branded coins, World Liberty Financial, and other crypto ventures to collect billions of dollars while wealthy buyers, corporations, and foreign interests gain new ways to funnel money into businesses tied to the president.
The public sees through this power grab. Our recent poll found majorities of voters across party lines are concerned that crypto money will distort the legislative process and produce another industry giveaway.
