Dear Avaaz,
I just can't believe where we're at. At the Paris climate summit, leading governments repeatedly consulted Avaaz on the deal before most other governments! Because millions of us are marching, signing, messaging and donating, our movement is actually shaping history. No, really, we are.
This isn't scrappy, pick easy targets, get excited about small wins activism. This is people power arriving, in force, on the global stage, going up against the worst forces, and WINNING. I have just one response to this:
More.
Because our world is desperate for this kind of hope, and the really unbelievable thing is, we're just getting started. We've grown from 4 million people to 40 in the last 5 years. Even more important, our sense of excitement is deepening, with a large majority of us polled saying we feel a 'magic' present in our movement that we don't see elsewhere.
Avaaz is only ever as strong as each of us choose to make it -- 100% of our funding is strictly from small member donations. We only ask twice a year, so now is the time when we decide together how strong, how big Avaaz will be in 2016. The amount doesn't matter as much as how many of us make the commitment to say "I'm in, let's dream big":
Climate change is one of the greatest challenges of our time, and 18 months ago people were hopeless about it. What our movement has done and how we've done it has changed the game on this issue. By catalyzing and spearheading the largest climate marches ever in 2014 and 2015, donating millions to crucial advocacy efforts, generating hundreds of campaigns, millions of messages and thousands of articles in the press and holding hundreds of meetings with top government leaders to drive home our call for a 100% clean energy transition.
But imagine what we could do if we were ten times stronger, or 100 times. If there were even more of us, even more deeply invested, powered by even greater resources. I can't help it, when I look at almost every problem in the world today -- from elephant poaching to political corruption to corporate abuse to deforestation and human rights crises -- I see Avaaz as the answer, or at least a crucial part of the answer. When people come together with enough scale, vision and commitment, the world is ours to shape.
And Avaaz is unique. Noone else has the combination of scale, vision and commitment we have as a single, united global community of 42 million human beings. That's why we have so much potential, and so much responsibility. But the decision about whether we rise to this responsibility is, as ever, up to all of us. Shall we rise even higher, dream even bigger in 2016 ?
In my own journey this year I've learned how important it is not to hide your light, to step into recognition of your full power and potential, individually and collectively. Avaaz is unique in combining our unprecedented scale with the light we share - an "Avaazy" spirit of the "heart" of hope and love twinned with the "head" of effective, creative strategy. And on that score, our only limits are the ones we choose to give ourselves. For the sake of all of us, let's dream big together in 2016.
With love, gratitude, and hope,
Ricken and the whole Avaaz team
