Pour le poète français Serge-Mathurin THEBAULT, TOUT COMPTE.

A la fin tout compte

sommeil et insomnies

rêves éveillés et songes profonds.

Tout me grandit lorsque j’avale

un bec de nuage dans la largeur

de son espace.

Tout m’est permis

quand aucun geste ne repose

sur une conquête matérielle.

J’use mon don

Tu agitais ton masque d’ombre.            (chant I,  Le Néant)

(...)   (chant III  Paradeisos)

U.S (Atlanta) : Stop COP CITY now !

Friend, if you give the cops an inch, they'll take a forest. Literally.

Atlanta city officials are working with the police foundation to destroy 400 acres of forest to construct a massive training facility for the police force. The military-style facility will include a mock village (complete with a nightclub), an emergency vehicle driving course, dozens of firing ranges, a Black Hawk helicopter landing pad, and an area for explosives training.

The neighborhoods surrounding Cop City are largely Black and brown and low-income–the very people most likely to be terrorized by police. The new facility will force them to hear gunshots, sirens, and explosions, while the police tear down one of the few areas of nature and calm available to these communities.

The proposed site is the Weelaunee Forest, a 400-acre area of green space stolen from the Muscogee-Creek people and turned into a "farm" site where incarcerated Black laborers were forced to work in the 1900s. The site carries a history of state-sanctioned violence and now it's slated for a police playground in the backyards of low-income Black and brown folks.

Cutting down the old growth forest would cause severe ecological damage to the surrounding communities. The trees of the forest absorb carbon dioxide before it gets released into the atmosphere, keep Atlanta cool during its long, hot summers, and prevent stormwater sediment from running into a nearby creek, where, without any kind of barricade, it could seep into the drinking water supply.

We don't have to merely imagine the escalated violations that could result from Cop City. Already protestors trying to stop its construction have been arrested and charged with domestic terrorism. You read that right : domestic terrorism charges for protestors. Another protestor was shot thirteen times by police who have claimed, sans evidence, that the protestor shot first.

To fund and build a mega facility for police to learn warfare tactics in a major U.S. city is a bold message that no amount of scrutiny, no calls for police accountability will ever stop police from facing us as enemy combatants. If Atlanta gets its Cop City, we can guarantee more to follow across the nation.

I was an adult before I learned of the Black history of Memorial Day, the enslaved people who didn't know they were rightfully free until Juneteenth, or even Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. and Rosa Parks' radical leanings.

The whitewashing of history, presenting only white people as heroes and Black dissenters as meek and lacking agency, is every bit as intentional as forbidding enslaved people to read. An informed and maligned people will rise up, demand more, and buck against the institutions that oppress them.

Luckily, I had educators inside and outside the classroom who gave me supplemental materials to shape my identity as a Black child in America. Now, just after a Black president, increased pressure on the police state from Black people, and the mainstreaming of white supremacy, these materials are being outlawed in schools and libraries. The motive to quell Black dissent and criminalize Black dissenters and their allies could not be clearer, and our call to action could not be more urgent.

Sign the petition: Black history is American history and must not be erased.
