Working people could spend decades saving for retirement only to have Wall Street’s AI gamble tear through the money they’re counting on. Financial giants are repackaging speculative data center debt and selling it to pension funds and other investors, spreading the risks of Silicon Valley’s spending frenzy throughout our economy. AFR investigated how those risks are building, who is helping move them onto working people, and what policymakers must do to protect us. Now our report with Open Markets Institute is generating national coverage and bringing scrutiny to the financial interests fueling this bubble. ![]() From The New York Times[1] and Forbes[2] to Politico’s Morning Money[3] and Benzinga[4], our findings are reaching audiences across the political and financial worlds. We’re getting the dangers to workers’ savings into the public debate while the firms profiting from these deals continue pushing for weaker oversight. That is how AFR takes on concentrated financial power: investigate the practices putting people at risk, expose them publicly, and give policymakers concrete steps to stop the harm. Your support helps us carry that work from a deeply researched report into national coverage and demands for action in Washington.
The threat reaches people who have never chosen an individual AI stock. Pension investments, funds inside retirement accounts, and life insurance policies can connect families’ financial security to risky financing arrangements buried beneath the industry’s promises of enormous future profits. As I warned in The New York Times, an AI-fueled downturn “would hit pension funds hard, particularly since A.I.-linked assets dominate stock and corporate bond markets as well.” Workers and retirees deserve answers before the companies borrowing heavily to build this infrastructure run into trouble. Our report calls for stronger oversight, transparency about the industry’s finances, and action to stop excessive risks from being shifted onto working people. We’re also demanding that policymakers reject bailouts for the firms and financiers responsible if their bets collapse, and prioritize assistance to households and communities harmed by a crisis. Getting these findings into the headlines creates an opening to press those demands, and we need the resources to keep pushing. Your donation helps sustain the research, media outreach, and advocacy that confront Wall Street’s influence and fight for people’s financial security. Let’s keep fighting for financial justice. -Maya. Maya Jenkins (she/her) [1] U.S. Pensions Are Riding the A.I. Wave. For Better or Worse.
