Donald Trump tried to turn the Postal Service into an enforcement arm for his voter suppression scheme. The USPS Board of Governors let him do it and now they need to course correct. Under Postmaster General David Steiner, USPS adopted a rule that would let it refuse to deliver certain ballots under Trump’s executive order attacking mail-in voting. The governors are the ones in charge of the independent agency and they have the authority to push back. They chose to go along. Thankfully, the courts have blocked this scheme for the 2026 election. You can continue making your plan to vote, including by mail which remains safe, easy, and secure — as always. But the board still needs to rescind the rule now. The postal board should have defended the independence of the Postal Service from the beginning. It’s the first step in repairing the damage to the public trust of the post office and mail-in voting, and to make sure they don’t get locked into more chaos.
Vote by mail is a safe, secure, and reliable way for older adults, veterans, farmers, shift workers, students, people with disabilities, and millions of other voters to participate in our elections. Trump keeps attacking mail-in voting under the false flag of election security to spread distrust, suppress votes, and undermine confidence in the results. We will not let him succeed. It is the states’ job to administer elections and determine voter eligibility. Not USPS. Not Trump. Postal workers deliver the ballots. Trump has no business trying to force the Postal Service into the role of federal election administrator. Congress reorganized USPS as an independent agency in 1970 specifically to protect it from political whims of the White House. The postal board has a responsibility to defend that independence. Waiting for the courts while leaving this rule in place is a failure of leadership. The board has the power to reverse it and protect the post office and mail-in voting. We need to demand they use it. Thank you for working to save the post office. - Annie and the Save the Post Office Coalition Team.
