Friend,
Today, our hearts are with the families who’ve lost loved ones to the most recent acts of gun violence and mass shootings, from Buffalo to Uvalde to Southern California. We cry, we hurt, and we’re mad as hell. We don’t know how else we could feel when our communities and our babies are under constant threat. Gun violence and mass shootings are up. And as long as it is easier to access guns than to access wrap-around intervention and support, more people will get hurt and die. Washington has got to stop acting like we can’t do something about this. We are forced to mourn too often - 21 mostly Latinx lives taken too soon in Texas, a white supremacist attack that took the lives of ten Black New Yorkers, an Asian churchgoer in California. And we mark the second anniversary of the murder of George Floyd. Let us be very clear about what the answer is and is not. The answer is not calling for more armed police on our streets and in our schools, regardless of whether the call comes from NRA-backed politicians like Ted Cruz or Democrats like Mayor Adams and Governor Hochul. We can’t cure hate and violence by investing more resources in institutions that manifest hate and violence in their treatment of Black and brown bodies. The answer is standing up to the NRA, to overhaul gun laws by banning assault style weapons, enhancing background checks and making guns far less accessible for everyone. When Republicans continuously refuse to stand up to the gun lobby, Democrats must do so. We urge Congressional leadership to lead with courage and END THE FILIBUSTER to protect our communities and our kids. And we urge our state and city leadership to focus on real solutions to keeping communities and young people safe—not just reaching for “law and order” solutions that actually put our communities further in harm's way.
