Gaza (SAVE THE CHILDREN INTERNATIONAL) : SHUROUQ's daughter thinks a fridge is a closet.

 

Hi friend, I want to share something deeply personal with you. Shurouq is 31. She works with Save the Children in Gaza. She’s also a mother. She lost her husband in the first weeks of the conflict. Since then, she and her three-year-old daughter, Karmel, have been displaced again and again. Six months after the ceasefire, she says this: We are still living in a grey city. Grey dominates everything… even our mood and our future. Every day, on her way to work, she passes her destroyed home. The room that breaks her the most is her daughter’s. It was brand new. Painted in pink, yellow and purple. Filled with toys. A room designed to grow with her child. Her daughter never spent a single night there.

And now, Shurouq asks herself a question no parent should ever face: How do I explain to my child that she once had a father, a home, and her own bedroom? Today, even the smallest things feel impossible. Shurouq recently managed to buy a refrigerator. It took days of searching and saving. Prices are soaring. Goods are scarce. But there is no electricity. Her daughter looked at it and said…Is this a closet? To give her daughter a warm shower, she has to heat water over a fire. This is life now.
