You may have seen Ben McKenzie in the TV show Gotham or remember him from The O.C. Maybe you’ve seen an ad recently for his upcoming thriller Bloat. But we at Americans for Financial Reform know Ben best for his leadership in exposing the scams driving crypto currency and advocating for what needs to be done to protect consumers and the economy. In fact, his new movie Everyone is Lying to You for Money, based on his New York Times bestseller, has already won over critics at film festivals around the world for exposing crypto as the largest ponzi scheme in history. Now, it’s screening in cities across the country. I got to sit down with Ben to talk about the film, the work it took to put it together, and what we can do to stop the Casino Capitalism schemes that have led to what he calls the Golden Age of Fraud. Check out the trailer for his movie and our conversation now.
Ben has pulled back the curtain on the crypto industry and the culture of hype, misinformation, and speculation that fueled its explosive rise. He’s exposed how what was sold as the future of money with the promise of financial freedom from big banks and corporate control has evolved into a volatile ecosystem rife with fraud. And how it has led to devastating consequences for everyday people. His film traces how crypto became one of the most aggressively marketed financial products of the modern era — and how warning signs were ignored, dismissed, or deliberately obscured. Ben’s movie is fun, entertaining and often darkly ironic, but at its core, it’s a cautionary tale and a call for accountability — cutting through the noise to expose an industry largely built on speculation, greed and hype. -Mark.
