Hi,
I just got off the phone with Rachael Cummings, our Humanitarian Director for Save the Children in Gaza.
What she told me struck me to the core.
She had just returned from one of our clinics. Usually, there’s the sound of children crying, parents talking. But yesterday… silence. A room full of children too weak to speak. Too traumatised to cry. Too exhausted after 21 months of war to hold on to hope.
Some of them told Rachael they wish they could die — because at least in Heaven, there would be food.
Right now, we are witnessing the collapse of childhood in Gaza.
Mass starvation is spreading. Malnutrition has quadrupled — from 4.4% in May to over 16% in July. Almost every single child coming through our health centres is malnourished. Some are too weak to walk. Their caregivers? Just as frail. There is very little food left in the markets, and what’s there is too expensive for most people.
Each day also brings new massacres at so-called aid distribution sites. In just the past month, children have been killed or injured in more than half of all deadly incidents at these locations.
This is not humanitarian. This is not safe. This is inhuman.
Even humanitarian workers—our own colleagues—are now lining up for food, risking being shot just to feed their families. With supplies completely depleted, we are watching our partners waste away before our eyes.
We’re doing everything we can operating a primary health centre in Deir Al-Balah, delivering life-saving water, therapeutic food like Plumpy’Nut, psychosocial support, temporary learning spaces, and running child friendly spaces for children.
But this is not how humanitarian aid should work—under siege, under fire, without dignity or safety.
If we don’t act now, thousands—possibly hundreds of thousands—of children could die from starvation in the coming weeks.
Rachael said it clearly: Every malnourished child we see today could die if we don’t act now.
Please friend if you can, stand with children living in crisis by making a donation now.
