South Sudan/Uganda (SAVE THE CHILDREN ) : The incredible story of Elizabeth ...

Elizabeth* and her son Daniel *, 13, in Uganda

Hi friend,

T
oday is World Refugee Day, and I want to share a story that made me smile.

The incredible story of Elizabeth *, a mother of four children who fled violence in South Sudan in 2016, seeking safety and stability for her family in a refugee settlement in Uganda.

Years of economic crisis, repeated climate shocks such as devastating, heatwaves, and conflict have left families like Elizabeth *´s without food, income or access to basic health services, forcing them to flee.
Adjusting to their new life, in a new country, in the refugee camp was overwhelming. She felt isolated and vulnerable, unable to speak for her needs and struggling to provide for the family´s needs. Any money she received was entirely spent on food.
This is her story but also the story of over 9.3M million people – 54% of them children - are in need in South Sudan.

Everything began to change in 2018 when Elizabeth * received the help and support of Save the Children. She joined a savings group and was taught financial management and budgeting skills through the livelihoods project. She also learned how to rear pigs and chickens, and how to make safter energy-efficient cooking stoves. These skills were crucial in enabling her to earn a steady income, save and invest in her future. She now can buy food and even pay for school fees for her children.

Save the Children has worked in South Sudan since 1991, when it was part of Sudan. We provide families like Elizabeth´s with food security and livelihoods assistance.

She shared with us : Save the Children has changed my life. I'm really so happy. They do not give us money, but they have given us knowledge and skills, which have been provided to us as we are vulnerable women here in the camp.
Elizabeth has achieved something she believed impossible : she built her own home and now stands proudly as a financially independent woman, happy that she can provide for her children and plan for their future as a family.

Dear friend, I hope this story made you smile too. Elizabeth’s story is one of resilience, and it’s not unique. More than 40% of the 123 million people globally who were forced to flee their homes due to persecution, conflict or violence last year were children.

Nobody chooses to become a refugee. But with your help, it doesn't have to define them. Save the Children is there — helping children and families not just survive but rebuild their lives with dignity and hope.
