Just one month after the Ebola outbreak was declared in the Democratic Republic of Congo, more than 800 cases and nearly 200 deaths have already been reported.
Children are paying the highest price. At least 52 children have contracted Ebola and 19 children have already lost their lives. Children under 15 are more than twice as likely to die after contracting the virus than older age groups.
Unlike some previous Ebola outbreaks, there is currently no approved vaccine or treatment for this strain.
Behind these numbers are health workers like Jules*, a head nurse working on the frontline of the outbreak:
"I’m on my way to work at the health centre, with a lot of concern, a lot of fear. Why? Because infections are rising. The number of deaths is increasing too. We don’t have the means to protect ourselves. Without the support, it will be very difficult."
Every day, Jules and his colleagues care for sick children and families while working to stop the virus from spreading through their communities. But many health facilities still urgently need protective equipment and infection prevention supplies.
With the support of donors like you, Save the Children has already reached more than 19,000 people through our Ebola response, helping strengthen health facilities, train health workers and raise awareness in affected communities.
But the outbreak is spreading fast.
That's why I'm asking for your support today.
A donation of $100 could purchase 50kg of chlorine to disinfect health facilities, schools, water points and other high-risk areas, helping protect children and families from infection.
