Trump’s attempt to take over the USPS Board of Governors is moving fast, and the Senate could help him pull it off this month. The Senate Homeland Security and Governmental Affairs Committee has scheduled a hearing for Trump’s four nominees to the Postal Board: Jeffrey Brodsky, William Gallo, Anthony Lomangino, and Robert Steffens. If they move through committee and get confirmed by the full Senate, Trump will take a giant leap forward in his long-running plan to privatize the Postal Service. If Trump’s four Republican nominees are confirmed, the Board shifts to five Republicans, two Democrats, and one independent. That would give Trump and his MAGA allies a governing majority over the decisions that shape USPS pricing, delivery standards, post office access, postal leadership, the future of universal service, and election mail. The timing of these nominees is no coincidence. These board seats have been empty since Trump took office last year, but this year is a major election year, and he wants control of election mail. These guys are wealthy corporate Trump donors and financiers with no meaningful public service record defending the Postal Service, postal workers, rural access, affordable mail, or vote by mail. You’ll remember Anthony Lomangino from Trump’s last attempt to stack the Board. He is a Trump megadonor from the Mar-a-Lago donor network. The others come from the same corporate finance, restructuring, commodities, and dealmaking world that sees public service as a balance-sheet problem to cut down. Senators need to hear from us before committee members vote and before leadership tries to rush these nominees to the floor. Last year, public pressure helped stop Trump’s Postal Board nominees. We need to make that happen again. Tell your Senators to vote NO in committee and vote NO if these nominees reach the Senate floor.
We stopped Trump’s last set of USPS Board nominees last year because grassroots pressure made it politically toxic to hand the Postal Service to his privatization machine. That is exactly why they are trying to move this slate so quickly now. Trump already installed a FedEx-linked Postmaster General. He already tried to fire the Postal Board and move USPS under the Commerce Department. He already pushed an executive order attacking vote by mail, and USPS is already facing pressure to turn the mail system into a ballot-access checkpoint that could keep eligible voters from even receiving their ballots. A Trump majority on the Postal Board would compound every threat at once, including threats to vote by mail, privatization, service cuts, and higher prices. Every Senator needs to hear this. Red state, or blue state, every Senator represents people who rely on the Postal Service. Voting for these nominees means voting to destroy the Postal Service as we know it. Let’s stop Trump’s Postal Board takeover before it becomes a done deal. - Annie and the Save the Post Office Coalition Team.
