Home insurance is getting more expensive, harder to find and keep, and in some places impossible to find. Premiums skyrocket with no warning. Policies get cancelled. Claims get unjustly denied. People are paying more for less coverage. Those costs bleed over into higher rent, they cause people to wipe out their savings, skimp on groceries and medical care, and turn keeping a roof over someone’s head into a monthly crisis. Meanwhile these big insurance companies are helping cause the climate risk they then bill you for. The same insurance industry that is hiking rates and walking away from communities is also still underwriting and investing in the very fossil fuel projects that are contributing to the worsening climate disasters wiping out communities. These insurance companies report massive profits and tell policyholders they have to pay more, accept less, or lose coverage altogether. State legislators and state insurance regulators must exercise their authority to hold insurance companies accountable in a way that puts people and the planet over industry profits. Americans for Financial Reform is collecting real stories from homeowners and renters. We will take those stories into statehouses and put them in front of the decision-makers who can pass legislation to stop the price gouging, stop the retreat from communities, and stop insurance companies from bankrolling the very fossil fuel projects contributing to the larger climate crisis. Your story is the whole point. If you faced a premium spike, a dropped policy, a rent increase, a denied claim, or the slow squeeze of higher deductibles and less coverage, we want it in your own words. Real experiences lifted and told together makes it all the more difficult for lawmakers and regulators to look away.
Insurance companies want to keep quietly operating in these unfair and unjust ways without interference. They want to not have to disclose data, hide things in small print—that fog is good for their extractive business model. If the public only hears industry talking points, legislators will keep rubber-stamping rate hikes and letting companies abandon whole neighborhoods while they keep financing oil, gas, and coal. AFR is already fighting the insurance industry in the states, supporting efforts to ban credit-score penalties in homeowners insurance and expose claim delays and denials. We are backing fossil-fuel accountability bills so insurance companies stop profiting from the climate damage they help cause, and we’re demanding regulators stop treating record profits and disappearing coverage as an acceptable outcome. Let’s make sure lawmakers and regulators hear the stories insurance companies would rather silence and ignore. - Annie. Annie Norman (she/her)
