Never-before-seen footage reveals the catastrophic impacts caused by bottom trawling

Yesterday, OCEAN WITH DAVID ATTENBOROUGH launched globally in cinemas. His greatest film yet is a rallying cry for world leaders to protect our ocean from the devastation of bottom trawling.

A new poll undertaken by Blue Marine reveals overwhelming public support for a trawling ban in protected areas. It follows the cinema release of feature film OCEAN WITH DAVID ATTENBOROUGH, which has opened the eyes of audiences to graphic scenes of the destruction caused by trawling, filmed in greater detail than ever before.

“ Bottom trawling is still allowed in many so-called marine protected areas worldwide. And perhaps even more astonishingly, it is subsidised by governments. Very few places are safe from this. including almost nowhere in my own country. ” - David Attenborough, in OCEAN

Now we are faced with one of the greatest ocean opportunities of our time - to ban bottom trawling in UK marine protected areas, most of which are still subjected to this destructive fishing method. YOU can help us make this happen by being part of our latest campaign #TheBottomLine. Take action with Blue MarineOceana UK and Only One by asking Steve Reed to close our marine protected areas to bottom trawling.

Most people would, understandably, imagine that a marine protected area is just that – protected. But that isn’t the case. An Oceana UK report found that domestic offshore MPAs alone endured over 33,000 hours of bottom trawling in 2023.

The video in this email lays bare the devastating impacts of bottom trawling - from the way the huge and heavy nets indiscriminately snare at anything and everything in their way, to the vast quantities of marine life that wasn’t supposed to be caught, “bycatch,” which is discarded dead or dying.

Added to that the destruction to ocean floor habitats like seagrass and kelp that provide food and shelter for all kind of marine wildlife. These habitats and the seabed itself, are also carbon stores which draw down and hold carbon out of the atmosphere, mitigating climate change. Our ocean deserves better.

We stand at a crossroads, protect our ocean and save our planet, or continue to plunder our greatest natural asset. #TheBottomLine is, you can’t have a marine protected area and trawl it.

Which side of history will you be on? Join us in taking action today.
