Seven-year-old migrant, Jakelin Caal Maquin, died this week while in ICE's custody. Jakelin's death is the unfortunate result of this administration's cruel and inhumane immigration policies. Jakelin was apprehended at the border with her father and forced into a detention center, that ultimately did not provide sufficient resources and care.
Thousands of migrants still languish in detention centers as the Trump administration purposely slows down their asylum application process. The Trump administration's immigration policy has been to explicitly make migrants exercising their legal right to apply for asylum languish in subpar facilities and suffer severe health risks.
In addition, thousands of migrant children are still under ICE's custody and have not been returned or reunited with their families. ICE has taken a cruel and tortuous stance toward migrant children and their families and will continue to abuse desperate migrants until Congress takes a stand and demands accountability.
