$29 billion. That’s how much Tesla just granted Elon Musk in stock, a payout so extreme it’s reignited national outrage over executive pay. Musk’s award is nearly unfathomable, especially considering he has been an absentee CEO who spent most of this year tanking Tesla's image and stock price through his actions at DOGE by gutting the federal government, including eviscerating consumer protections. Meanwhile, Tesla’s median worker earns just $45,811 a year. It’s an insult to working people everywhere. Excessive CEO pay rewards short-term gains, incentivizes corporate recklessness, and deepens economic inequality. CEOs gamble big, pocket billions, and leave workers and the public to clean up the mess. From failed banks to toxic workplaces, the consequences are real, and it's time Congress stepped up to rein it in. Lawmakers have the opportunity to act. The Tax Excessive CEO Pay Act, the Curtailing Executive Overcompensation (CEO) Act, and the CEO Accountability and Responsibility Act all propose different mechanisms to rein in this obscene corporate practice. Whether through higher taxes on companies with massive pay gaps or by stripping corporate tax breaks from those enriching their executives at the public’s expense, there are already solutions to make sure that CEOs cannot build their personal profits on the backs of workers. Tell Congress: It’s time to rein in excessive CEO pay and hold greedy corporations accountable for the damage of
Musk’s $29 billion pay package award came after a court threw out his previous, obscene $56 billion compensation package. So what did they do in response? Tesla’s board doubled down, offering him an interim pay package until and in case the other one is thrown out by the court. That tells you everything you need to know about the current system. The world’s richest man can run around recklessly doing whatever he wants, (but not his job as Tesla CEO) and still gets rewarded, no matter the cost to workers, the economy, or the public trust. That’s why we need Congressional action. These bills would curb excessive CEO pay, tax extreme corporations with the highest pay gaps, and rein in reckless corporate greed. At a time when people across the country are struggling to afford housing, child care, and health care, Congress must act. Companies like Tesla have no excuse for rewarding the world’s richest man billions to not do his job, while aggressively union- busting their hardworking employees who make, on average, less than $50K. This is about more than Elon Musk though. It’s about our values as a country. It’s about ending a rigged system that funnels wealth upward while millions get left behind. Tell your member of Congress to support bold action to Thank you for demanding fairness and justice. Annie. Annie Norman (she/her)
