Dear friend,

Umi Selah, Co-Director of Dream Defenders just started a petition
titled :

Why is this important ?

The Miami Herald conducted an investigation recently that
confirmed what we have long known : Florida's juvenile
facilities are destroying our children.1 Officer-involved
beatings, sexual assault, and a culture of violent depravity was
uncovered from these facilities that prey on vulnerable Florida
youth. Guards and administrators are forcing the children in these
prisons to brutally beat each other. In exchange for snacks, they
are running “Fight Clubs” for their own entertainment. These
young people are fighting for their lives in these prisons and
shouldn't have to fight for themselves alone. Standing idly while
children in these structures are tortured is to be complicit in the
destruction of their innocence and their lives.

Join us as we tell the Governor and his friends that our
children's lives are #NotAGame! It's time to end these
contracts and get serious about protecting our children !
The prison system is tearing up our families, communities,
and future generations.

Right now, our communities face many challenges. Imprisonment
is a big one. Corporations and their politician friends have made it
their life’s work to enact policies that keep our families and
communities in jails. Every time someone in our neighborhoods is
locked up, corporations make money. These prison profiteers,
like Florida-based GEO and CCA, operate in the dark, away
from the public's view. And they work hard to keep it that way.
Their lavish vacations and retirement funds depend on it. On top of
that, most people aren’t aware of how the prison industry operates
and feel powerless to change it.

These private prison corporations and the politicians they sponsor
are playing with the lives of our children like it's a game of
monopoly. But, we're rising up to declare that this is
#NotAGame! This is about the wellbeing of our children and
community.

Our children deserve opportunities to learn and grow. But,
instead, they are being purposefully subjected to emotional,
psychological, and physical agony by guards and
administrators running these hostile prisons. Our goal at
Dream Defenders is to end the prison system's hold on our
state's’ policies, profits, priorities, and people. We’re working
in classrooms, communities, and prisons to educate and
organize to end this incredible threat to our lives. We can’t
continue to watch this happening to the people in our communities.

We have to act ! If we can do this; if we can begin to break this
massive machine by freeing our children from its hold, then we
can begin to collapse it in our lifetime. If we do not, we risk
losing many more generations. Sign here.

Thank You for Standing with Us,

Umi Selah
Co-Founder, the Dream Defenders
