Michigan State Police director Kriste Kibbey
Etue called is still on the job and her
leadership is a threat to communities.
Call Gov. Rick Snyder at 844-298-2731 to
demand he fires Etue now !
Dear friend,
It’s now been one week and Michigan State Police director Kriste Kibbey Etue is still in office. Etue’s reckless Facebook post calling Black NFL players who protest against police brutality “degenerates” crossed a line and it was an abuse of power. Now she is trying to profit from her abusive leadership by collecting a taxpayer-funded pension along with her salary. With a lazy apology from the director, Governor Rick Snyder is choosing to stand behind racism and refusing to remove her from office.
Governor Rick Snyder needs to hear from you today. The pressure is building. Over 72,000 Color of Change members like you have signed the petition to demand Etue is fired. Several groups such as Michigan Legislative Black Caucus, Detroit Coalition Against Police Brutality, and even U.S. Representative John Conyers are all calling for the removal of Kriste Kibbey Etue from her position.1 We can amplify pressure right now by calling his office. It’s time he hears from you. Calls are the best way to get an influential leader’s attention in such critical moment.
Etue’s insulting Facebook post matches her failed leadership. In 2013, two black Michigan State Police troopers filed and won a high-profile lawsuit against the Michigan State police department for race discrimination.2 And it gets worse. The department has gone as far to retaliate against the Black officers that filed a lawsuit. When responding to the lawsuits, director Etue’s response was appalling. She said the discrimination claims were “unconfirmed allegations...and the Michigan State Police would never discriminate or retaliate against one of its own.” This is all happening with the department is dealing with the killing of 15-year-old Damon Grimes and multiple misconduct lawsuits.
At a time when finally police violence is being called out, Kriste Kibbey Etue has no place holding leadership with Michigan State Police or any position within the criminal justice system. Black people are disproportionately affected by the criminal justice system through police violence, mass incarceration, and criminalization. Etue is in a powerful position where she should be doing more to end the dysfunction of not only the Michigan State Police but to work to remedy the entire failed system instead of shaming people who protest. It’s time to stop excusing and ignoring people like Kriste Kibbey Etue who continue to operate as mouthpieces for Trump’s right-wing, white supremacist agenda. That is why we need to get Governor Rick Snyder’s attention now. Governor Snyder must be on the right side of history.
Until justice is real,
