Healthcare is not only a human right, it’s also a treaty right. But,
with Indian health services severely underfunded, Medicare and Medicaid
are critical to filling the gaps.
Across the country, health inequities by race, gender, disability,
and income are the result of a long history of discriminatory denial of
care. And, while the COVID-19 public health emergency allowed us to
expand access to Medicaid and CHIP (the Children’s Health Insurance
Program) to millions more people, those emergency protections will soon
vanish unless Congress acts.
Send
a message to your senators and representative: Demand they protect and
expand access to Medicaid in end-of-year legislation to protect millions
of people from losing health coverage, including Indigenous
communities.

Our 2022 Indigenous Futures Survey found that access to healthcare is
among the top concerns heard from communities in Indian Country -- with
the climate crisis and systemic racism rounding out the top three.
For Native communities, healthcare access often means
Medicaid access. Medicaid covers roughly 40% of births nationwide --
with higher rates among Indigenous communities and other communities of
color.
As Congress works to pass a legislative package by year’s end, we’re
demanding continuous and expanded Medicaid and CHIP coverage, including
12 months of continuous eligibility for adults and children, 12 month
postpartum coverage and other provisions to improve maternal and child
health outcomes.

Congress protect and expand Medicaid in must-pass end-of-year
legislation.
Thank you for taking action today to fight for healthcare as a human right.
