This past Thursday, VOCAL-NY was present across the state fighting for care and compassion from all levels of government. In
Manhattan, the Civil Rights Union joined partners in gathering for 18
hours at City Hall Park to honor the 18 lives stolen on Rikers Island
this year alone. Advocates called for the Mayor to end the humanitarian
crisis immediately. See a full list of demands here. In Brooklyn, the Homelessness Union marched and rallied to demand the City and State create permanent housing
for the 100,000+ students in NYC that don't have a place to call
home. It's crucial state lawmakers back policies like the Housing Access
Voucher Program rental assistance and the Good Cause bill, which would
protect tenants from unjust eviction and exorbitant rent hikes. And in Albany, leaders with the Albany chapter spoke at a press conference calling for the nomination of a new Chief Judge with demonstrated commitment to preserving, protecting, and advancing the civil and social rights of all New
Yorkers. |
