My name is Milton Perez. I am a VOCAL-NY leader and have been living in a shelter in Brooklyn for over five years. I’m writing to tell you about why I’m fighting for the Invest In Our NY Act and Housing Access Voucher Program (HAVP) in this year's state budget. HAVP is a statewide rental assistance program for homeless New Yorkers and tenants facing eviction or facing loss of housing. Across the state, over 92,000 people are homeless like me, living in shelters or on the streets. New York State has done little to help us. Meanwhile, New York’s billionaire’s got $77 billion richer during the pandemic. Right now NY offers no rental assistance for single adults who are homeless. People who are undocumented can't access the housing resources that exist. And cities and towns upstate don't have the funding to provide homeless residents paths to permanent housing. Click here to send an email to NYS leaders and urge them to support the Invest In Our NY Act to fund HAVP. HAVP would work like Section-8. People would qualify based on their income and regardless of immigration status. Low income NYers, people receiving public assistance, or social security could qualify and use the voucher to rent an apartment. HAVP would be permanent (as long as you qualify, you get it). Governor Cuomo, Majority Leader Stewart-Cousins, and Speaker Heastie must support the Invest In Our New York Act -- a package of six bills that ends tax breaks for the richest New Yorkers and would raise $50 billion to fund HAVP and ensure every NYer has a home. Thank you,
Milton Perez. |
