Dear friend,
It has been less than a month since the United States was rocked yet again by a weekend of mass shootings, this time in El Paso, TX and Dayton, OH. In just one weekend at least 31 people were murdered and dozens more were injured.1
Such tragedies are all too common, but they are not inevitable. We CAN end gun violence. Join UltraViolet, Color of Change, and Everytown for a virtual townhall via conference call on Thursday, September 5 at 5PT/6MT/7CT/8ET to reflect and prepare for action to stop gun violence.
In a story that's now all too familiar, both the El Paso and Dayton shooters had a history of violence. While in high school, it was well known that the Dayton shooter kept a list of female classmates he wanted to sexually assault.2 The El Paso shooter wrote a racist, anti-immigrant "manifesto" before he opened fire.3
When people--often young white men--are taught to hate women and people of color, they turn violent. When violent racist and sexist people get access to guns, they can kill many people.
To stop the epidemic of gun violence in this country, we must understand how to end misogyny and white supremacy, as well as how to pass gun safety laws. That's why UltraViolet is teaming up with Color of Change, the nation’s largest online racial justice organization, and Everytown for Gun Safety, which fights for sensible gun policies, to lead a public conversation about gun violence.
