Twenty years ago, in the aftermath of 9/11, Congress enshrined the Patriot Act -- an extensive increase of the government's authority to spy on its own citizens. The results were disastrous.

 

The legacy of the Patriot Act is two decades of unfettered surveillance on millions of Americans, without warrants or needing to prove any kind of probable cause. The Patriot Act has become a bedrock of domestic spying, with top secret courts providing almost no oversight, and costing taxpayers billions of dollars.

 

This stops now – the time has come for Congress to rectify the damage that the Patriot Act wreaked and put a stop to it once and for all.
