Methane has a massive impact on global warming, with up to 80 times the impact on global warming of carbon dioxide in the short term. Leaking wells can also release toxic chemicals, heavy metals, and particulate matter into the air that harm people locally. The US Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) is considering rules to limit methane emissions from oil and gas, but there will be strong opposition to water them down.
