U.S : Emmitt TILL DESERVES JUSTICE !

Friend, when I was 13 years old my aunt sat my cousins and I down and forced us to watch The Murder of Emmett Till on PBS. Needless to say, I was horrified and it forever changed my view on race and the American legal system.

On August 28th 1955, Emmett was brutally murdered for whistling at a white woman and his murderers were found not guilty by an all-white, all-male jury. His murderers admitted to it four months later.

Carolyn Bryant Donham, the woman who made the false accusation that caused Emmett his life, is still alive and should be held accountable for her actions.

Three days later, Carolyn’s husband Roy and his brother J.W. Miliam showed up at Emmett’s uncle's house during the wee hours of the morning and kidnapped Emmett. Once they got to the car, they asked the person in the car “was this the right boy”. To which a lady’s voice responded that it was.

Several days later Emmett’s nude body was found badly disfigured by two fishermen. He had been shot above the right ear, and his face had been beaten beyond recognition. The only way his body could be identified was by the ring on his finger.

His murder attracted attention from around the world. His mother had his body sent back to Chicago and demanded an open casket funeral so that people could see what was done to her child. She stated that as she was on her way to the funeral home, about three blocks away, an odor hit her that almost knocked her out. She later learned that the smell was Emmett’s body.

Jet magazine published pictures of Emmett’s badly decomposing body and this led to the start of the modern civil rights movement. Rosa Parks stated that his murder was one of the reasons that she refused to give up her seat on the bus in Montgomery.

At the trial, Carolyn stated under oath that Emmett said “ugly remarks” to her before whistling. The all-white, all male jury only took 67 minutes deliberating. One of the jurors in Emmett’s case stated that the only reason it took so long was because they had to take a break to drink a pop.

Four months after the trial, the men sold their story for $4000 to Look magazine, and described very freely how they brutally murdered Emmett.

J.W. Miliam and Roy Bryant were never brought to justice and both later died of cancer. Carolyn Bryant Donham is the last surving accomplice to the murder of Emmett Till. In 2017, she admitted that she lied to her husband, and to the jury, with her claims of Emmett making sexual advances and touching her. The lies of Carolyn Bryant led to the murder of an innocent child.

The family of Emmitt Till deserves justice. For over 65 years, Carolyn Bryant Donham has failed to be held accountable for her actions. Let’s bring justice to this family, once and for all.
