Friend,
Rise is fighting back against Georgia Republicans’ blatant attempts at voter suppression.
Rise Georgia State Director, Mary-Pat Hector said it best : in 2020, voters “were physically distressed from standing, unprotected, in the direct sun.” We know because we saw it firsthand : Rise’s young organizers were out in the streets with voters throughout early voting and election day, handing out cold water and snacks to voters—which is now illegal under Georgia law.
So we’re suing them, along with our co-plaintiffs the New Georgia Project, and Black Voters Matter. If we’re successful, we can block the enforcement of the measure that outlaws giving food and water to people waiting in line to vote.
This law was passed after Georgians turned out in record numbers in 2020, and it’s proof that they’re trying to stop our voices from being heard in 2022. By closing dozens of polling places, and banning free water and food for voters waiting to hit the polls, they’re actively trying to ensure long, uncomfortable wait times in high-population density areas—a.k.a the places most likely to vote blue.
If this measure is allowed to stand, we can expect Republican legislatures around the country to replicate it. It will join the nationwide efforts of right-wing politicians to keep young people and people of color from exercising their fundamental right to vote.
Rise is fighting to ensure that everyone in Georgia and around the country can participate in free and fair elections. Georgia’s ban on giving water and snacks to voters infringes on the right to vote and MUST be stopped.
We’re counting on your support―Co-sign Rise’s lawsuit to STOP voter suppression in Georgia!
Thank you for joining us in this fight,
Max Lubin
