Crude oil and natural gas behemoth Enbridge Energy is seeking to build
an oil tunnel as a replacement for the 69-year-old Line 5 pipeline that
would continue pumping oil through the heart of the Great Lakes.
Pipelines like Line 5 are ticking time bombs for disasters. In fact, Enbridge was responsible for the 2010 Kalamazoo River oil spill, the second-largest inland oil spill in our country’s history that cost more than $1 billion to clean up.
We cannot afford another disaster – a Line 5 rupture in the Straits of Mackinac would impact 700 miles of Great Lakes shoreline, take years to clean up, and could devastate our Great Lakes. Additionally, the project threatens frontline tribal communities
who retain treaty-protected access to the waterway proposed for the
pipeline – constructing a tunnel for the underwater pipeline poses risks
to fish populations, sacred burial sites, and medicinal plant species.
The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers is currently seeking public comments on
the proposed Enbridge Great Lakes Tunnel plan. This is our opportunity
to say NO – we want fresh water, no new greenhouse gas emissions, and
full protections of the rights and environments for Indigenous peoples !
