U.S (Color Of Change) : Tracy McCARTER deserves more justice than the system prosecuting her can deliver.

It has been two and half years since Tracy McCarter, a Black survivor of domestic violence, was indicted for the murder of her estranged husband James Murray. Now, we’re calling on every Color Of Change member to join our public pressure campaign calling on Manhattan District Attorney Alvin Bragg to drop all charges against her. We must mobilize and protect the lives of Black survivors of intimate partner violence. Can we count on you to join the fight?

Here’s the latest on Tracy’s case :

Tracy is still confined to her residence under electronic monitoring, unable to resume work and required to pay for her electronic shackle because Bragg refuses to drop all charges.
Last month, Bronx County Supreme Court Justice Diane Kiesel denied a request by prosecutors to reduce the murder charge to manslaughter. This leaves prosecutors in the bizarre situation of going forward on charges of a crime they know Tracy did not commit.
Now, Tracy will be forced to fight for her life (again) during a trial, where, if convicted, she faces 25 years to life in prison.

The criminal legal system will never achieve justice for survivors. Every day, Black women are terrorized by violence, re-traumatized by abuse and betrayed by police who are paid to protect and serve the public. The myth that we can achieve "public safety" through increased incarceration, prosecuting and criminalizing Black people is not a new one. This is the myth that the United States is founded on.
