Friend, the midterms are two weeks away. In many states, early voting has already begun.
We know you're receiving a lot of emails about these elections right now but given this timeline – and the ongoing attempts at voter suppression as recent as last week in Florida – we at the ACLU wanted to share along both a resource and an update specifically about your fundamental rights that you should have ahead of Election Day.
First, we know you're well aware of how many civil liberties are at stake this year – so we're equipping you with a crucial Midterms Conversation Guide you can use to both inform yourself and help mobilize your network to vote in defense of people's rights. This guide is free and covers key issue areas like abortion rights, free speech, voting rights, LGBTQ rights, racial justice, and more. Be sure to download it today. You'll also be able to find the conversation guide in Spanish.
Second, in the lead-up to this November's elections, we wanted to remind and assure you that our lawyers, advocates, and organizers are working non-stop to protect your right to vote.
Last week, disturbing footage obtained from police body cameras showed the arrests of Floridians with past felony convictions for voting in the 2020 presidential election while allegedly ineligible. To arrest these Floridians for honest mistakes about their eligibility is a clear exploitation of the state's flawed system – and we are actively seeking measures to help ensure Florida immediately stops threatening the liberty of its own citizens like this.
Meanwhile, we recently filed a motion alongside our Pennsylvania affiliate to intervene in the state's latest effort to disenfranchise mail-in votes, secured victories in Montana against two unconstitutional state laws that would severely hinder Native American participation in the electoral process, and are challenging Alabama's racially gerrymandered congressional maps at the Supreme Court.
And that's only our work in October. We've been litigating voting rights and redistricting cases – from Georgia to Texas to Ohio – since before this election year, and we aren't letting up any time soon.
Friend, together, we can and will remind our elected officials this November that they do not have the final say when it comes to our rights – we do. So get your guide today, get ready to mobilize, and thank you for being with us in the fight to protect the civil liberties of us all.
For democracy and for the people,
