Friend,
Today we mark Juneteenth, a symbol of freedom deferred and a celebration of the ongoing struggle for Black liberation. As the first activist from the movement for Black lives to be elected to Congress, I’m unafraid to call for the bold changes we deserve. The U.S. government has a responsibility to fix the harms from centuries of enslaving stolen Africans who built this country’s wealth. We’re still living with the vestiges of slavery, with a $14 trillion Black-white wealth gap, ongoing housing discrimination, outrageous healthcare disparities, and a so-called justice system that criminalizes and brutalizes Black people simply because we’re Black. I refuse to accept this status quo, which is why I recently introduced legislation to enact reparations for Black Americans. With love,
Cori. |
