U.S (WIN WITHOUT WAR) : TODAY, an urgent chance to SUPPORT REFUGEES.

The United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees just reported that a record-setting 110 million people have been forced from their homes, friend.

Now, as we approach World Refugee Day this Tuesday, June 20, it’s time to take a hard look at our broken immigration system — and work to restore the United States’ role as a place of safe haven for people forced to flee.

Every year, there is a “cap” on the number of refugees the United States will even consider resettling. That means accepting more refugees from Venezuela or Afghanistan bars others seeking safety from violent conflicts, climate change, and political persecution — situations that U.S. foreign and domestic policy often exacerbate.

But with every new administration, this cap seesaws up and down, driving chaos and instability. Xenophobes like Stephen Miller and Donald Trump hollowed out U.S. refugee resettlement by setting the cap at a historic low of just 15,000. President Biden has done better by raising the cap to 125,000. Now, we can help ensure it doesn’t dip lower ever again.

Congress could stop presidents from treating refugees like political pawns by setting the floor at a minimum of 125,000 refugees each year. It’s time to show the world we can be a welcoming and compassionate nation — and activists like us can lead the way !

People forced to flee around the world are counting on people like us — people who believe in human dignity. Let’s remind our elected representatives that the time for action is now. Tell Congress to #WelcomeRefugees.

ACT NOW

Immigration shouldn’t be a zero-sum system — and it doesn’t have to be. The United States has a history of opening its doors to people fleeing crisis : the 1980 refugee cap was set at *231,700*.

Accepting refugees isn't just about upholding the values of liberty, equality, and justice for all. It is also a strategic imperative for global stability and diplomacy. Offering a home to refugees promotes peace by providing a safety valve for regions destabilized by conflict, persecution, and disaster.

But these goals have been increasingly obscured as fear-mongering and xenophobia have replaced facts and empathy. Activists like us can push back against racism and hatred by reaffirming our commitment to people in need.

In the spirit of World Refugee Day, let us remember the inscription on the Statue of Liberty : "Give me your tired, your poor, Your huddled masses yearning to breathe free." We can ensure those words are more than just a slogan. Can you call on Congress to #WelcomeRefugees today ?

We must not stand by as lives hang in the balance, friend. Let Congress know that the people stand for compassion, liberty, and the opportunity to build a new life free from fear.

Our broken foreign policy and failing immigration system are a bipartisan problem. Just last year alone, 19 million people left their homes to seek refuge from violent conflicts, climate change, and political persecution — some of which the United States has exacerbated.

Change comes from the bottom up, and we are committed to organizing and mobilizing enough people to turn the tide toward peace and welcome.

Thank you for working for peace,

Annika, Raimy, Stephen, and the Win Without War team
