Friend,
We find ourselves today at the crossroads of free thought and censorship. A war is being waged not on battlefields, but in our libraries, schools, and the halls of our government.
The very fabric of intellectual freedom and the richness of diverse ideas are under attack, threatened by those who seek to silence voices and control the narrative by banning books.
Now, Amazon, a company that has built its empire on the sale of books and other forms of media, has become an unexpected player in this war on knowledge. Despite its roots in the realm of free expression and open access to information, the company is supporting the forces of censorship and repression.
According to OpenSecrets.org, Amazon donated over $740,000 to Republican candidates during the 2022 election cycle and these funds were given to 104 Republican members of the House, and 31 Republican senators, with a significant portion of their political contributions going to the very people leading the charge against free thought and expression.
In the current political climate, such donations are not neutral acts. They are direct contributions to a campaign of censorship that threatens our children's education, our access to diverse voices, and the fundamental principles upon which our country was built.
In states across America, from Florida to Idaho to Texas, extremists are not only targeting books but also the very institutions that safeguard them : our public libraries.
These vital pillars of knowledge are under siege, facing relentless attacks from those who seek to impose their narrow worldview and Amazon is fueling their efforts by donating to the Republican Party in these states.
In fact, nearly half of the funds donated by Amazon’s Political Action Committees (PAC) went to the Republican Party in states across the country, including Texas, Florida, and Idaho. The very same states banning books and defunding libraries.
The bottom line is that book banning is a dangerous practice that restricts access to information and narrows the diversity of perspectives available to the public. It hampers the growth of knowledge, suppresses creativity, and limits the ability of individuals to form their own opinions.
By donating to politicians who advocate for book banning, Amazon is complicit in perpetuating a harmful cycle that infringes upon the rights of authors, readers, and society as a whole. This practice undermines the very essence of a thriving literary and intellectual culture.
Let’s continue to stand for freedom of thought, diversity of opinion, and the right of all people to access books.
